Innovation That Matters
Captymer® Technology
Captymer® technology aims to provide a substantially better alternative to the current styrene-divinyl benzene system in terms of overall treatment cost by leveraging its core strength of exceptional high-exchange capacity Captymer® media.
Captymer® media are a type of anion, chelation, and absorbent resins. They are made from crosslinked hyperbranched polyamines that have intrinsic high density of amine functionality to the material. As a result, they have substantially more binding sites than commercial styrene-divinyl benzene anion exchange resins. Thus, more water can be treated before their exhaustion.
Captymer® media are in bead form with a spherical morphology, similar flow dynamics, exchange kinetics and mechanical strength like conventional ion exchange resins. They are designed to be directly employed or to replace conventional resin in a pressure vessel. Captymer® WBA (Weak Base Anion exchanger) is tested to have at least 2 times the capacity of commercial WBAs. Captymer® SBA (Strong Base Anion exchanger) is tested to have at least 1.5 times the salt splitting capacity of commercial SBAs.
Captymer® media can be facilely synthesized in one to two steps to tailor for different applications in modulating ion selectivity. Strategically, Captymer® WBA is used to serve as a common base block. Utilizing a robust chemistry with widely available and diverse chemicals, the modifiers, a desired physical property on the ion-binding sites can be achieved in one step in most of cases. As a result, a suite of various ion-specific Captymer® media can be readily obtained and tested for applications i.e.:
Modulating hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity: chromium-6, uranium, perchlorate, nitrate and PFAS selective media for groundwater remediation
Tuning strong/weak base sites ratio of media: mixed SB/WB bead’s media for DI water for industrial power generation
Anchoring ligand/recognition motif to the media: precious metal recovering and affinity-based separations for life science applications
As an example, in comparison to the literature reported separation factor (alpha) of the best of its kind resin for the specific ions, Captymer® SBA-201 is one of the variations which preferentially binds to high valence ions with a significantly higher selectivity to uranium and chromium than commercial ones.
